Final Fantasy VII review
FFVII was such an addictive game for me because it's world, story and characters drew me in so much.FFVII is the game that got me into RPGs.
The story is about an ex-soldier named Cloud Strife who joins a group of rebels named AVALANCHE as a mercenary and AVALANCHE are trying to stop a company named Shinra(Shinra are a military company who control much of the world and oppress the people in their world and are draining a type of energy from their planet and this type of energy is referred to as 'mako' and mako gives life to their planet and since Shinra are extracting mako it's causing their planet to die).Shinra profit greatly because Shinra have made it so people have become dependent on Shinra energy for their daily lives and Shinra have caused much of their planet to become polluted because of the mako reactors constantly running and because they dump toxic waste into surrounding environments.
For the first few hours of the game, your focus is on stopping Shinra(your group of characters will go around blowing up Shinra reactors),until Sephiroth enters the story...
SPOILER BELOW
Sephiroth is believed to have been the one who slaughtered much of the high-ranking people in the Shinra company and Sephiroth is responsible for slaughtering entire towns and burning them to the ground and he has plans to make himself become almost invincible by making an comet hit their world and when their planet heals itself,he will steal it's lifestream energy.
END OF SPOILER
The game has a love triangle and psychological and emotional moments, for example a certaub character has to choose between paying Cloud to assist AVALANCHE or saving the money for his daughter to go to school and I still remember the intensity in that moment when that character had to choose between his daughter's future or the future of the world.
There's moments in the story that are very shocking and emotional but I don't want to spoil them for you.
But I will say not all the characters in your party will survive, one of the party members is a spy and ancient races and legendary,nature-filled worlds come into the story,so do aliens and the history of Cloud,Sephiroth, and the other characters are slowly revealed in a well-paced way and they have such complex pasts filled with surprising revelations and some of them have troubled pasts.
Right from the opening scene I was hooked because when I saw Cloud leaping from the training and fighting past the Shinra soldiers I just knew this game was going to be an epic story/adventure.
I like how you start the game in a dark, polluted city named Midgar, but you'll travel through the countryside and to a beautiful tropical resort and through country towns and even to a theme park(and you can play the games in the theme park)and you can even get lost in the desert and seaside towns that are becoming polluted from Shinra and a haunted house and there's other surprises I'll let you experience for yourself.
Besides Cloud and Sephiroth, the other characters include:-
Your party characters:-
Barret,a muscular,stockily-built black man who has a machine-gun replacing his right hand that he lost. He's the leader of AVALANCHE.He will have to confront some demons from his past and he's always tense and angry but it's because he's worried about the fate of is world and about his daughter.
Tifa Lockheart, who is a beautiful, busty brunette woman who has been close friends with Cloud for a long time and has spent intimate moments with Cloud and has feelings for him.
Aeris,a beautiful, mysterious brunette girl who sells flowers and likes to work at a garden. She has a lot of secrets to reveal and they're very important for the story.
RED XIII,is a talking animal from a species that looks like a mixture of lion and wolf. His species have their own tribal culture and he has a lot more to his past then you'd originally think. He was used a research specimen by Shinra until he was freed by the group.
Cat Sith,a little,fortune- telling cat,who rides on top of a mechanical,walking thing.
Cid,who wanted to be the first man in space. He is the guy in their group who knows how to use high tech/scientific things.
There's also optional characters that can join your party too.
As for the villains:-
Sephiroth is one of the most famous video game villains for a reason,he is intelligent, and evil and cold. There is a lot more to him but I will let you discover it for yourself.
There is many Shinra employees who are villains and they're the typical selfish people who only care about money and who use their soldiers and technology against you.
The alien named JENOVA is a villain too and has surprising things about it.
As for the gameplay, the battles are turn-based and use an active time battle system so enemies will keep attacking you whether you've taken you're turn or not but you can program your next turn quickly to make the battles go faster and you can wait and allow an enemy to have a turn before you so you can see which character might need to be healed.
You'll travel across a world map to very diverse environments and lots of towns.
You have lots of leveling up to do,but for the first 1/3 of the game it's very possible to defeat enemies without level
grinding and using good tactics because I've done so,but eventually you'll need to level grind but I like how level-grinding a lot doesn't ensure you victory and you'll need to make us of limit breaks which are extremely powerful attacks that each party member has and the normal limit breaks can easily remove 1/3 to 1/2 of a boss's health and you can find hidden limit breaks that will do even more damage.Using limit breaks effectively(which means keeping your characters long enough to charge up their limit break is crucical and adds a degree of unpredictability and tension to the battles).
The spells of your characters(materia)level up.You can make any character become a powerful black mage/white mage and any character can summon a creature to do a lot of damage but summoning can only be used a limited number of times doing battle.
There is some interesting sidequests and mini games you can do.You can do a sidequest which involves breeding a particular type of Chocobo(which is time consuming),so you can use it to reach a place that would otherwise be inaccessible,so you can gain an extremely powerful summon. You can buy your own place in the tropical resort(which means saving lots of gil),you can play games at the arcade in the Gold Saucer theme park(include mini arcade games). You can do chocobo racing, using a submarine to hunt an enemy before time expires, creating an army of robots to defeat another army of robots, disguising yourself as a woman, weight lifting, looking at beautiful views of the galaxy through a telescope, learning how to march properly, eating at a diner and telling he chef his food was good,ok or tastes like dogfood and you can influence who Cloud goes on a date with, and it's a nice scene when he is on the ride with that person at the themepark. Some minigames or activities are required to make
the story progress,I don't want to spoil things for you but you'll need to win at least one Chocobo race, however having to do so made the story feel more exciting.
There's other little things about the game that I liked, such as when you're at a store on a farm, and the children explained their prices are very expensive because their parents died and they are going through tough times.
And how you must give CPR to a child who has nearly drowned(using a mini game style technique).
The characters may look blocky and have weird bodily proportions but it gives them charm such as Cloud having his way over-the-top spiky hair and Barret looking a bit stocky compared to his movie counterpart.Tifa being very busty despite her slim build and the object that Cat Sith rides looking clumsy but cute.
I like the detail and atmosphere in Midgar such as seeing how people live in the city slums and as if they live in poverty and how Midgar is designed with different levels built on top of each other and it looks futuristic. The reactors in Midgar make it look polluted and the dark sky and old style cars driving around remind me of a 1940's film noir type movie.
The tropical resort has beautiful water, palm trees, nice sand and you can even see people swimming in the water and you can even kick a ball around that kids are kicking on the beach. The ancient ruins have vegetation growing through them showing nobody has lived there for a long time and you have the little, traditional style country towns.
The cinematics are exciting and took story-telling in RPGs to a whole new level
SPOILERS BELOW
I love the scene when the characters are trying to get away from the Shinra reactor before it explodes you'll see a cinematic explosion and news reports of it on the TV.
I like the scene when Cloud is surrounded by the Shinra soldiers, and he jumps onto the moving train.
END OF SPOILERS
I like the cutscene with the AVALANCHE members riding the train and on their way to their next mission and talking to eachother,it just felt like it was building up to something epic, and it did.
The battle theme music is enjoyable too.
FFVII is one of the most addictive games I have played and is one of the best games I have played and this game got me into RPGs.
I give this game a score of 10 out of 10 because it's extremely addictive and captivating and you'll want to keep seeing what happens in it's story next everything in the game feels just right and the game is timeless.
Lost Odyssey review
Lost Odyssey is a masterpiece, another RPG from Sakaguchi(the creator of Final Fantasy and the mastermind who wrote the stories for Final Fantasy I,Final Fantasy IV and Final Fantasy IX).It's actually in my top 10 favorite games of all-time(and I've played thousands of games)and it's an emotional and intriguing journey from start to finish.
The main character for the game is named 'Kaim',he's an immortal whom has lived for over 1000 years but something caused him to lose his memories.Kaim has to rediscover his past piece by piece and he does that by being in certain places or talking to certain people and it will give him flashbacks and some of these memories are very sad and traumatizing and will reveal many secrets about him.
Kaim's memories are represented either by cinematic style flashbacks or by text with delicate music. The fact I experienced these memories at the same time they return to Kaim made me feel a lot of empathy for him because he discovered very painful revelations about his life and some of them are heartbreaking and involve his love life.
Other characters join Kaim on his journey, and some of them are immortals too who have also lost their memories and some of the characters are mortals(meaning they age like normal people). Some of the immortals are involved in Kaim's past in important ways or have their own shocking revelations.Even some of the mortals are linked with Kaim's past or with the past of the other immortals in very significant ways.
Incase you're wondering, the story does have romance,in fact it has more than one love story and they're both heartfelt in different ways.
There is 8 party members in all and it's hard to give background info on them without giving away spoilers but I'll say some of them are pirates and one of them is a beautiful queen of a well-developed nation and another one was significant to Kaim in a certain way but she's lost her memeories about it and she and Kaim have gone through incredibly painful times together and I won't say what happened during those times but it's heartbreaking.
The characters do have something that makes them stand out, whether it's their personality or past or occupation.
As for Lost Odyssey's gameplay, well it's another turn-based JRPG with a world map/towns/cities to explore and NPC's to interact with. For uniqueness it has:-
-A ring system that allows the characters to buy and equip rings and during battle,a set of rings will appear and if you press a button when one ring is the same size as the other ring,it will do extra damage.
-Immortals can learn skills from other characters.Immortals can also auto revive themselves after they've been Koed for a while.
-To save you time from having to level grind,as you progress through the story you'll level up very quickly for a few levels but after you level up a few levels your leveling up will slow down until you progress throught the story a bit more.
-You can also do combo attacks with melee attacks or spells. You can do double healing spells if you wish.Doing combo attacks requires MPs though.
Back to the regular part of the review.
The game is not an easy game. Some of the dungeons don't allow you to leave them after you enter them and have high random enemy encounter rates and can push your MP supply to it's limits, and to make things even harder, some of the dungeons have puzzles that require lots of memorization(backtracking)and trial-by-error and since you have random enemies constantly attacking you and since you cannot leave the dungeon to restock on potions to restore HP/MP,it almost becomes a game of attrition.Using the right type of attack against an enemy is as cruicial as being highly-leveled.Some of the boss fights are tough, even if you're highly leveled and sometimes the ability of your immortals to auto-resurrect themselves randomly feels like a necessity rather than a benefit but it makes battles more unpredictable. Also, you need to deal with certain bosses diferently, for example against some bosses it's almost a must to have Cooke in your party because she's got great magical buff skills to greatly reduce very powerful magial attacks, but against other bosses,Cooke will be a liability because of her weak physical defense and lower max HP.Some dungeons require you to escape the dungeon within a time limit(just like with FFVII,however when you're doing this in Lost Odyssey it's harder because the enemies are stronger and dungeons are bigger)and the timer will keep going even when you're fighting enemies.
The game also tries to use realistic physics such as it being slippery on ice, heavy rain slows down your walking, security robots can hear your heavy footsteps or if you knock over objects but you can distract them by making an object fall over in another place to sneak past them.
The game has a lot of cutscenes and cinematics and is very story-driven(which is why the game requires 4 discs).
The characters have detailed skin tone and there is beautiful lighting effects at times during cinematics(kinda like with Shadow Hearts Covenant).
The cinematics also show beautiful views of the ocean with a sunset int he background. Some of the action cinematic scenes are very exciting and fast-paced.
However, some of the cutscenes do look a bit rough and rushed.
The world has a blend of medieval as well as industrial and Sci Fi such as flying cars. Some cities look very look beautiful with lovely architecture and white buildings and will be near the ocean and will have details such as nicely paved areas and water fountains.
The tropical places have realistic sea water, sand and palm trees.I like the little details such as seeing sand hills surrounded by sea water and little sea creatures in pools of water.
For atmosphere, the industrial areas have a yellow sky in the background and it blends nicely with the dark-colored buildings. There is also realistic rainfall and heavy snowstorms.
The voice acting has a good amount of expression without being over-the-top.
Lost Odyssey has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. The music is composed by people who did music for Final Fantasy games. There is delicate/gentle sounding piano music the emotional moments. There is heart warming love songs for the romantic moments which suit the mood very well. The music for the environments or when you're traveling the world map is great too.I love the music for the boss fights, especially for the final boss because it sounds so orchestric and diabolic at the same time.Sometimes, instead of piano music for emotional moments, you will hear the sad song of a woman's voice singing.
Overall,it's was an incredible experience and although the game will test your patience,I found it to be almost a perfect JRPG experience and on a spiritual level it feels much like a 5th or 6th gen Final Fantasy game, and I can definitely see Sakaguchi's touch with this game.
I will go as far as giving this game a score of 10 out of 10 because there's nothing that I want to change in this game.

Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII review
FFVII is regarded by many as the best RPG of all-time and even as the best game of all-time for a whole bunch of reasons I'm not going to explain.
FFVII Crisis Core is a prequel to FFVII that is set 7 years before FFVII and shows what the world was like and what Shinra were up to back then and shows the past of some of the famous FFVII characters such as Cloud,Aerith,Sephiroth in a lot of depth, and Yuffie,Tifa come into the story at some point.
You'll be surprised at how differently Cloud and Sephiroth are portrayed in Crisis Core, compared to how they're portayed in FFVII.People who haven't played Crisis Core will probably think Cloud is an ''emotionless guy with no personality'' and they'll think Sephiroth is an ''evil and vengeful character'' but Crisis Core explains why Cloud and Sephiroth became the people they are in FFVII.Even though Cloud and Sephiroth are portrayed as very different people in Crisis Core,it's not simply to make them different people for the sake of it,because the way they're both portrayed in Crisis Core relate to the story in FFVII in a very important way. It's the same for Aerith. In Crisis Core,Aerith seems more cheerful and talkative where as in FFVII,it seemed as if Aerith was a bit quiet and despite the fact she smiles a lot she was really sad inside. After playing Crisis Core,I have a better understanding of why Aerith acts the way she does in FFVII.Crisis Core will also show the relationship Aerith had with...
SPOILERS BELOW
her first boyfriend Zach, who looks very similar to Cloud, except he has black hair.Crisis Core shows how much Aerith really did love Zach and after the game's heart breaking ending,I can see why Aerith is depressed in FFVII.
END OF SPOILERS
The main character in the game is named 'Zach'.He was a member of Shinra's military and eventually rose to the rank of SOLDIER.Zach has a very important relationship with Aerith and Cloud and is largely responsible for Cloud becoming the character he is in FFVII and for many important story moments with Aerith in FFVII.Zach is a likable character, because he's funny, goofy but tough and he tries to do his job the best he can while trying to be with his girlfriend as much as he can.Even when he is away doing important military operations he'll be thinking about his girlfriend.
The new characters include,Angeal,Genesis,Cissnei,Lazard,Dr. Hollander. They all play an important role in the story and can be involved in some very emotional story events or be part of big story revelations.
Basically, the main story is about how Shinra are at war against a nation named 'Wutai'.Zach,Angeal,Genesis and Sephiroth are members of Shinra's military and they'll discover secrets about Shinra which changes each individual's destiny in different ways.Whether it is getting revenge on Shinra, taking over the world, saving the world,or simply trying to be with the woman they love.In the end, you'll be trying to save the world and you'll be trying to help Zach be with the woman he loves.
Overall,I enjoyed the story a lot because it's very emotional(enough to nearly make me wipe away a tear)it has big plot twists/revelations,has romance etc.
I enjoyed the battle system a lot.The battle system is in real time and you literally can spam out healing magic to heal Zach quickly or you can spam out attacking magic. You can dodge enemy attacks by running away from their attacks and you can block their attacks.Zach is the only character you can use and you won't have any party members join you in battle for the entire game.
A unique and entertaining feature the battle system uses is what's called the 'Digital Mind Wave' or DMW.It's like a slot machine that's constantly on in the background and certain icons allow limit breaks, summons, massive healing, levelling up of materia/character levels to be done.In fact, limit breaks, summoning, levelling up are only done using the DMW system. It might sound offputting at first, but for the most part, this system works great. There is many different types of limit breaks Zach can do,so Zach has a great chance of rolling up the slots for a limit break.Summoning happens less often though. You can roll up slots that give you big HP/MP increases and you'll roll them up constantly, and no matter what your max HP is,you can easily find yourself with 9999 HP.
However, some enemies can bring your HP down very quickly because they have powerful attacks or attack very rapidly but you can also raise your HP quickly. These elements make the battle system fast and fun. However, the levelling up system is a bit annoying because I think the slot machine makes Zach level up randomly(you'll level up when the slot machine rolls up 777).I've heard the levelling up is not random and the game hides it's experience points counter towards you levelling up to the next level, but there has been times I've levelled up multiple times very quickly and other times I went a long time without levelling up,even though I was fighting the same enemies. But,the limit breaks,summoning,HP/MP boosts are done at random.
The environments are a bit small and don't offer anywhere near as much exploration as many of the other FF games. But at least the environments look good and some of the environments are in the places you've visited in FFVII,which brings back happy memories.
You can do MANY sidequests that can add lots of extra playing time to the game, which takes around 20 hours to beat if you stick to beating the main story. Some of the sidequests, which are referred to as 'missions' can be attempted at any save point by simply selecting which mission you want to attempt and you'll automatically be taken to the area where the mission is(which saves you a lot of time on travel). The missions reward you with rarer items and materia and have sidestories.
Some of the sidequests can be attempted after you discover them yourself by walking around certain environments and talking to people.
Some of the sidequests can be attempted after you discover them yourself by walking around certain environments and talking to people.
In fact, you can learn about much of the game's backstory and information about the game's world and about Shinra by reading emails that are sent to Zach, which are accessible anytime through the game's menu.
The game's graphics have great atmosphere, whether you're inside the polluted city of Midgar which has city sectors built on top of one another to give a confined and claustrophobic feeling,or in the beautiful, tropical Costa Del Sol(which has beautiful blue ocean water),as well as in other tropical areas, and you'll see the quaint little country town of Nibelheim and other quaint little towns, over snowy mountains or in Wutai where there's Asian style buildings.
The CGI scenes make the characters have lifelike skin tone, hair, clothing and look very beautiful and incredible for a PSP game. The CGI's are also very cinematic/artistic and make the emotional story elements very heart felt,to the point you almost want to cry.

For it's time the PSP brought lifelike cinematics in a way that no other handheld console could. In FFVII Crisis Core, for it's time the cinematics were beautiful and artistic.
The cinematics for limit breaks and summons are beautifully/creatively done.Such as seeing helicopters shooting guns/rockets at your target or Zach spectacular, powerful attacks or scenes in the church beside Aerith's flowers when Zach is using a healing limit break.
The music is incredible and makes you feel the delicate/emotional/love story moments even more,to the extent I felt pain in my heart during the sad love story moments.
The character voices give the characters more personality.Especially Aerith and Cloud.Hearing Sephiroth's voice in Crisis Core before Sephiroth became evil shows a saner and more compassionate side to Sephiroth.

The score I give Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core is 9.75 out of 10.
